Rytec Spiral LH High-Speed Garage Doors

The Spiral LH, from the quarter-century-old Wisconsin company that bills itself "the nation’s leading manufacturer of high-performance doors for industrial, commercial, pharmaceutical and cold-storage environments" — hey, you want a high-tech door, you go to a door expert — rolls up and down at up to 60 inches per second. Let's translate that: It raises itself five feet in one second. Compare that to your lumbering, grinding, groaning garage door that maybe, maybe, raises itself at about one-eighth of that speed or less.

The "LH" in the model name stands for "low headroom," as is common with most co-ops' and condos'; residential garages, and it needs only 11 inches of headroom clearance. The anodized aluminum-slat door has a rubber membrane that covers the connecting hinges and, together with a rubber weather-seal, helps keep out dust, drafts and the elements. And if its rapid closing weren't enough to help keep out trespassers, there's an optional integral locking system.

It's also quiet. Remember that grinding and groaning we were just talking about? The Spiral's roll-up design features no metal-to-metal contact, therefore offering quiet operation. It's "System 3" model door controller is designed to operate with many different types of activators, and options include motion detectors and presence sensors which can open the door automatically; driver radio control or pull cords; and a pedestrian push-button.

Check out this video. You wouldn't normally think of garage doors as cool, but wait till you see the aluminum roll up like wrapping paper. It all looks like a 1930s Buck Rogers vision of the far-flung future of 1966!
