The Michigan-based company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Altair Engineering, says its high-brightness LEDs (light-emitting diodes, as if you didn't know) work in conjunction with what it modestly calls "well-engineered optics, circuitry and thermal management" to provide a lot of light without a lot of power consumption.
According to Ilumisys, the MK1's patented circuitry allows it to work in existing fluorescent fixtures, without modifications to the fixtures or ballasts. They'll also run directly from 110 VAC or other building line currents as specified.
"As specified"? In this case, that means MK1 products are currently only available on an installation-specific basis direct from Ilumisys, so you'll need to contact the company directly. The technical team promises to "work to specify the right product based on intended use, providing facility-based proposals for improved lighting and energy savings." So if you want to be in the green vanguard, get the LED in.
