The 7 Will Be the New L
Sept. 5, 2016 — Shutdown of L train will be a bruise for Brooklyn but a potential boon for Queens.
A new report by Ariel Property Advisors predicts that when the L train shuts down for major repairs in 2019, Queens neighborhoods along the 7 train will experience a real estate explosion similar to the hipster invasion that transformed neighborhoods in the L’s path, including Williamsburg, East Williamsburg, Bushwick and eventually Ridgewood, Queens, DNAinfo reports.
“Long Island City prices, along with all the other [Queens] neighborhoods, have risen dramatically over the last five years,” said Aryeh Orlofsky, director of investment research at Ariel, a real estate services and advisory group based in Manhattan. “You’re going to have people who were set on Long Island City and Astoria moving eastward.” Sunnyside, Woodside and Jackson Heights, according to the report, will be the next destinations.
Also fuelling the migration to Queens will be next year’s opening of the Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island. And don't forget, the Mets still play in Flushing.
