CNYC Offers Free Seminars on How to Comply With Local Law 97
Sept. 22, 2023 — Co-op and condo boards can get expert advice free of charge.
The Council of New York Cooperatives & Condominiums (CNYC) will offer “Sustainability with Affordability: A Four-Part LL97 Series” to help co-op and condo boards that are struggling to meet Local Law 97 compliance thresholds for 2024 and/or 2029. The classes are free and all board members are invited. They will be held on Zoom on four Thursdays: Sept. 28, Oct. 12, Oct. 19 and Oct. 26 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Beginning in 2024, most buildings larger than 25,000 square feet, including co-ops and condominiums, will have to reduce their buildings' carbon emissions under prescribed caps, or face stiff fines. The caps become progressively more stringent in 2030 and in successive years.
The series will provide specific targeted help, pertinent case studies, take-away resources, funding advice, an explanation of the “good-faith-effort” rule, and a multitude of contacts. Breakout rooms will be utilized to provide information based on building type. CNYC expects board members to leave the last class well on the way to developing a feasible sustainability and decarbonization plan for their building.
“With the 2025 deadline quickly approaching we are committed to ensuring New York City’s co-op and condo boards have the information and assistance they need to avoid unnecessary fines stemming from LL97," says Rebecca Poole, CYNC's director of membership and communication. "Hosting these classes, and advocating for incentives and rebates for buildings undertaking huge projects to help New York City meet its necessary carbon reduction goals, are two important steps. We are pleased to be joined by an incredible array of speakers at our series, who are likewise dedicated to mobilizing compliance and preventing fines.”
Speakers will include: Deputy Commissioner for Sustainability Laura Popa; Simon Mugo of the NYC Accelerator; Jessica Tusing, head of compliance at Argo Real Estate; Darren Johnson of Bright Power; Dennis DePaolo, executive vice president at Orsid Realty; Peter Varsalona, principal at Rand Engineering & Architecture (and CNYC’s president); Ed Yaker from Amalgamated Housing co-op; Matt Resnick, director of project management for AKAM Associates; Carolyn Scibelli, lead program manager for National Grid NYC and L.I. Energy Efficiency Programs; and others.
The series is free, but pre-registration is required. Individuals can register by emailing info@cnyc.coop with their name, the email address at which they wish to receive the zoom links, and their building address. Registration can also be done through CNYC’s website at https://www.cnyc.com/events.php.
