Advance Tabco Wire Utility Carts

There's an old TV commercial starring The Flintstones in which Fred and Barney dolefully watch their wives hanging laundry, mowing the lawn and doing all sorts of weekend maintenance tasks. "Y'know, Barney," says Fred, "we can't just stand here and watch the girls working like that" — and so the two them, instead of helping, go 'round to the other side of the house for a cigarette break. (Now that's an old commercial!)

It's not the same thing, obviously, when we see our supers, porters and handypersons lugging tools, paint cans, plumbing parts, etc. — that's part of the job they're hired for. But if we can make that part a bit easier and faster, why, increased efficiency means increased productivity. That's such an old saying, economists probably came up with it in the Stone Age — which is when the wheel may have been invented, leading us to this cutting-edge version of an old standby (or maybe roll-by), the wire utility cart.

You've got zillions of types to choose from, of course, so consider this representative of a species. The WUC line from Advance Tabco — a 79-year-old, major manufacturer of stainless steel sinks, worktables and many other fabricated items for the foodservice industry, primarily — is both sturdy and attractive, in an elegantly functional way, and the wire shelves satisfy storage experts' recommendation that you use shelving that's let you see quickly and easily what's on them.

These chrome-plated beauties come with tubular handles for ergonomically easy gripping and handling; your choice of rubber or plastic casters, with brakes; and what are called "donut" bumpers, so that your walls and such don't get scratched. They come disassembled, but hey, they're lots easier to put together than Christmas bikes.

Most models measure from 18 to 24 inches wide and 36 to 42 inches long, weighing 53 to 61 pounds, and range from $477 to $583.
