HeatTrak Heated Walkway Mats
Oct. 30, 2009 — Just because it's fall doesn't mean you want to fall. But ice and slushy snow can send you face-first onto the pavement. How can you help keep your staff and residents safe when Jack Frost comes nipping at their heels, grabbing at their ankles and slamming them into the cold, cold ground? Well, one way is to install these electrically heated walkway mats that melt away winter's leavings.
Available in 24-, 36- and 48-inch widths and a variety of lengths from five to 20 feet, these1/2-inch thick, non-slip mats (models HTM-24-5 to HTM48-6B) are made of UV-protected natural rubber can melt snow at a rate of two inches per hour. Its heating element plugs into any standard 120-volt or 240-volt outlet, and the mat is designed so that it can stay outside all winter. Grommet holes running along each side help secure it in place.
In terms of safety — what with the whole "electric device around water" thing — it has a circuit-breaker rating of 15A, and a ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI) trip level of 6 microamps (mA). No, we don't know what all that means, but the company's website said it in a way that suggests it all must mean something. The site also says that, depending on your electric rate, these mats cost from .04 to .40 per hour to operate.
A 24-inch x five-foot heated mat sells for $328.13, while the largest, a 36-inch x 20-foot model, goes for $2,025.
