Monzi Leaf Defier
Oct. 28, 2010 — You know that old humorous expression, "Make like a tree and leave"? It got to be an old humorous expression because, of course, trees shed leaves this time of year — and as any co-op board or condo association outside Manhattan knows, those leaves will clog up your gutters and cause backups and water damage and, well, just general ickiness. And who needs ickiness, general or otherwise? The typical cleanup involves getting to the gutters via ladder or roof, and then removing all the gunk by hand.
Fortunately, there's another way to deal with leaf-clogging. You just have to make like a tree and branch out in your thinking.
Simplicity itself, the Leaf Defier is a foam filter insert you place in your gutters to keep leaves, twigs, pine needles and any loose squirrel parts from entering and clogging the gutter systems. Oh, did we say "foam"? Excuse us. We meant "open cell polyurethane." Water goes right through it to help eliminate overflows that can lead to foundation cracks and other forms of water damage. It also helps keep pests from entering the gutter, including mosquitoes that breed in standing water or carpenter ants that can build nests in moist wood.
The Leaf Defier — and there's even a separate Leaf Defier XL! — is factory-treated with a biocide and a fungicide that inhibits the growth of mold, mildew, fungus, algae and moss. It also has a UV stabilizer to prevent degradation from the sun. The company says the product has been independently tested at 1,000 hours and 4,500 hours of xenon light-chamber exposure, and after the equivalent of five years' sun exposure retained more than 60 % of its original strength and integrity.
Sounds great. But about that name. Leaf Defier? Way too close to Leaf Defiler. Which would be something else entirely — and icky!
