MovinCool Office Pro Series Green Portable Air Conditioners

Sept. 4, 2009 — Summertime, and the livin' is breezy. Why? Because you have to keep the doors open in your basement, boiler room, laundry room or other part of your building where there's no a/c. And if the breeze ain't blowin'? Then your staff and residents are sweating in the heat and humidity, working lethargically, being all sticky and probably starting to smell a little ripe. You can't afford to retrofit central air into every area, so everybody's just going to have be uncomfortable, right? Including during heat waves and health advisories?

Not necessarily. When things heat up, you can break out a portable air conditioner — and here's one that uses the environmentally friendly R-410A refrigerant to boot. How cool is that?

The seven Office Pro models from MovinCool, a division of Japan's Denso Corporation, range from 12,000 to 60,000 BTU and are all relatively compact — the smallest, the Office Pro 12, measures 21x27x44 (WxDxH) — and fairly quiet, rated in the 50-70dB range as you go up in size. They're plug'n'play — just wheel 'em out — and according to the company can run for as little as 15 cents an hour in electrical and coolant costs. Each model has programmable digital controls for automatic evening and weekend operation. The half-dozen models range in list price from $3,655 to $12,495. (That's the 24,000 BTU Office Pro 24 pictured.)

The LEEDing edge of all this, as it were, is that they use the refrigerant R-410A (sold under such trademarked names as Carrier's Puron and inventor Honeywell's AZ-20), which unlike standard haloalkane refrigerants does not contribute to ozone depletion. Which means that as your co-op or condo strives to be greener — as who of us is not? — it's once again cool to be cool.
