Polyglass Kool Roof Solutions Self-Adhesive Membranes
On the roof, it's peaceful as can be, and there the world below can't bother me. Why? Well, I've got an old Drifters album playing on my iPod, and I'm sitting on a rooftop covered by a mixture of viscous, sticky, organic liquids soluble in carbon disulfide and primarily composed of condensed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons — bitumen, in other words. And if you know your roofs, you know your bitumen — a nice, waterproof material that works well with many other materials. Such as? Well, this latest, eco-friendly batch of roofing membranes from industry giant Polyglass, for starters.
Why do we say eco-friendly? Because Polyglass' Kool Roof Solutions Package — which includes its Polykool, Polybianko and Polyfresko self-adhesive roofing membranes, — have highly reflective white surfaces that help reduce energy consumption by minimizing the heat island effect. The company says the materials are Energy Star-rated, Cool Roof Rating Council-listed and California Title 24-compliant — all nice things that mean that such roofing can contribute toward your building's LEED credits.
The Kool membranes combine a top ply of APP ("asphaltic polypropylene polymersmodified," if you must know) bitumen compound with a self-adhesive bottom ply, eliminating the need for fasteners and other installation accessories. Let me tell you, now: On the roof's the only place I know where you just have to wish to make it so. But I live in Never-Never-Land. You, of course, would probably want to contact your architect and engineer, show him this, and see what he or she thinks before proceeding.
