The Home Depot EcoSmart LED Lights
Sept. 16, 2010 — Want to know how mainstream greening has gotten. The Home Depot has just introduced a line of LED (light-emitting diode) light bulbs under its house brand, EcoSmart — eco-smartly planning ahead for the planned phaseout of certain incandescent light bulbs, beginning in 2012. LEDs, as an astute co-op board or condo board is probably aware, use up to 85 percent less energy than incandescent and up to 50 percent less energy than compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), in addition to having exceptionally long lives. It doesn't quite make your forget that The Home Depot is publicly anti-union, but if a huge multinational conglomerate can help give oomph to ecological concerns, that's something, anyway.
The company has begun offering a line of EcoSmart LEDs including a 40-watt equivalent with a 50,000 hour expected lifetime (Model ECS 19 WW 120) that retails for $18.47, one of the lowest prices yet seen for this type of product. There's also the 60W-equivalent Model ECS 30 WW FL 120, which retails for $39.97, and the 75W-equivalent Model ECS 38 WW FL 120 (below), which goes for $44.97. Us, we need a good 100W bulb to be able to read comfortably, but we'll assume that's coming.
The Home Depot plans to offer different types of fixtures for these LED lights, including accent lighting, track lighting, room lighting and outdoor spotlights, and says all its lights are fully dimmable. You can currently buy them at HomeDepot.com, and they're scheduled to be in presumably all 2,244 stores by the end of September.
So as your co-op or condo prepares to refurbish your hallway, lobby, outdoor and other lights, it might be time to get the LED out ... and then properly install them.
